What is Backflow?

Backflow is when contaminated water has somehow reversed flow in the pipes leading up to your home. This can occur at any cross connection between clean water lines and dirty ones typically caused by an increase in pressure in the lines. The dirty water that then flows back through your pipes can have hazardous materials that are unsafe to drink like pesticides, human waste, unnatural chemicals, and so much more. Some assembly bodies are notorious for scaling and severe rusting that will foul the checks. Backflow assemblies with hinged checks instead of poppet checks are well known for collecting sand and debris and fouling out. All of these factors are the reason that an ongoing maintenance program is necessary for proper operation.
